Maxey is a village in the Peterborough unitary authority, in the ceremonial county of Cambridgeshire, between Peterborough and Stamford. History and heritage
The parish church, St Peter's, is Grade I listed: its west tower and nave date mainly from the 12th century, with a 13th-century chancel and 15th-century clerestory and chantry chapel additions. It is currently on Historic England's Heritage at Risk register, in "very bad" condition because of long-standing roof and moisture problems. The parish's population was 692 at the 2021 census.
Just outside the village, the earthworks of a moated medieval manor house known as Maxey Castle survive as a Scheduled Monument. It was built in the 1370s under a licence to crenellate granted to William Thorpe, but was already recorded as ruinous within two centuries; only the remains of its moat and fishpond survive today, not a standing building. Near Maxey, a group of five 17th and 18th-century bridges known as Lolham Bridges stand on the site of a Roman crossing of King Street over the River Welland. They are Grade II* listed and scheduled, though there is no nearby parking or footpath, and access is limited to a one-way road from the north.
