Deeping St Nicholas

A larger Fenland village east of the main Deepings, in the South Holland district of Lincolnshire. It grew mainly after the surrounding fen was drained in the 19th century, later than Market Deeping’s medieval market origins.
Why are they called the Deepings?
“Deeping” comes from the Old English dēoping, meaning “deep place”, a reference to the low-lying, once-marshy fenland beside the River Welland shared by these settlements. Each place then took its own distinguishing name: Market Deeping for its market, West Deeping for lying west of it, and Deeping St James and Deeping St Nicholas each after their parish church, as is common in English village names.
