History and heritage
Deeping Gate has a genuine claim to national significance: the composer Robert Fayrfax, one of the most prominent English composers during the reigns of Henry VII and Henry VIII, was born in the village in 1464, the son of William Fayrfax. Fairfax House, the village's most prominent property, was long associated with the Fayrfax family.
The village was traditionally part of the Soke of Peterborough, a historic administrative area once considered part of Northamptonshire, before later local government reforms placed it within the City of Peterborough unitary authority. The 2011 census recorded a parish population of 515.
Development and growth
Deeping Gate is affected by a large proposed housing development under Peterborough City Council’s emerging Local Plan. The draft plan includes a ‘New Settlement’ allocation of around 1,055 homes on land between the A15 and the B1524, adjoining the existing village - a very substantial increase on Deeping Gate’s current size of roughly 200 properties. As of September 2026, the Local Plan has not been adopted: it remains at a draft stage, with a further public consultation and submission to central government still to come, and no confirmed build-out timescale. Deeping Gate Parish Council has been engaging residents on the village’s own future through a Neighbourhood Plan process.
