History and heritage
Baston has a genuinely long history. Archaeological evidence points to farming activity in the area stretching back around 4,000 years, and an Anglo-Saxon cemetery was excavated here across the 19th and 20th centuries. The parish sits close to two Roman-era routes, King Street and the Car Dyke canal, part of a wider regional network that also passes near Market Deeping and Maxey. The parish's population was 1,469 at the 2011 census, growing to 1,576 by 2021 according to Baston Parish Council.
Baston is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086, when it already had both a church and a watermill, held jointly by Crowland Abbey and Ivo Taillebois of Driby. The present Church of St John the Baptist, on Church Street, is Grade I listed: its earliest parts date from the 13th century, with the tower added around 1403 and further additions in the 15th and 16th centuries. Two separate tombs beside the church are themselves Grade II listed.
Nature and visiting
Just north of the village, Baston Fen Nature Reserve is a Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust reserve of washland pasture along the River Glen, known for its wildfowl.
