Deeping St James is one of the five Deepings, on the south bank of the River Welland directly opposite Market Deeping, within South Kesteven district. It has a genuinely wide spread of independent pubs, restaurants and takeaways along Manor Way, Bridge Street and Church Street, and a strong base of local clubs and activities. Bin collections are handled by South Kesteven District Council, the same as Market Deeping. This guide also covers the village's own history.

History and heritage

Deeping St James takes its name from its parish church, St James's, consecrated in 1139 as the main church of Deeping Priory, a Benedictine priory founded the same year by Baldwin Fitz Gilbert as a cell of Thorney Abbey. The priory's own physical legacy survives today mainly through Market Deeping's Grade I listed Old Rectory, which incorporates part of the former priory's refectory and infirmary. See History of Market Deeping for the fuller story.
