History and heritage

Tallington takes its name from the Old English for "Tael's estate", and appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as "Talintune". The village sits on the A1175, connecting Stamford and Spalding, and has a level crossing over the East Coast Main Line; its own railway station closed in 1959. Somewhat unexpectedly, the village became a producer of concrete motorway bridges in the 20th century, including much of the Yorkshire section of the M62. The parish's population was 497 at the 2011 census, in around 200 houses.

The parish church, St Lawrence's, is Grade I listed and dates mainly from the 12th to 15th centuries; its spire was destroyed in a storm in 1762 and rebuilt in 1879. Tallington Mill, on Mill Lane, is a separately Grade II listed watermill dating from around 1700, enlarged in the 19th century.

Tallington Lakes and visiting

Tallington Lakes Leisure Park, a 205-acre watersports and leisure centre, is one of the area's best-known attractions - see Things to Do for current activities. The site and surrounding area also account for much of Tallington's accommodation, including several lakeside lodges - see Stay for current details.
