Market history

Market Deeping’s market has genuinely old roots. The town was granted market rights in 1220, and a further market charter followed in 1304, formalising the right to trade. Documented charters from this period covered a weekly market on a Wednesday and an annual fair, so today’s Wednesday trading day has real roots in that original grant, though this is not proof that a market has operated continuously, every single week, for the eight centuries since. Market Deeping was, in the words of one local-history source, “a busy market centre until the latter half of the twentieth century.” The town’s Market Place, where the Town Hall stands today, remains the historic and civic heart of the town, and a market cross once stood there too: a 1563 survey records “shops standing all of a row in the middle of the market Street near the Market Cross,” though no trace of it survives today. This is a different monument from the surviving Village Cross on Towngate, described on the History page. Today’s Wednesday market itself is held a short distance away, in the car park at the end of The Precincts, rather than on Market Place itself.
